Club Tournament Finals 2008

Cuddington’s Tennis Club’s tournament finals were held on Sunday 13th July, supported and cheered by a large crowd who were treated to some thrilling matches on a wonderfully hot and sunny afternoon.
Ladies Singles champion Lindsay Cochrane with runner up Liz OldfieldFor the first time in many years, the men's final was contested by two of the club's talented juniors, Brad Bird and Alex King. The spectators were treated to some inspired tennis from both players, with Alex King the eventual winner.
Men's Singles champion Alex King with runner up Brad BirdLindsey Cochrane and Liz Oldfield faced each other for the second year running in the ladies singles final, with Lindsey taking the trophy this year winning the tactical game against Liz’s hallmark accurate slice shots.
The men’s doubles final kept everyone on the edge of their seats with both pairs playing some awesome shots. With both pairs winning one set each Alex King's powerful ground strokes combined with strong volleying from Jamie Cummins tipped the balance in the deciding set.
In what has become known as the "Worrall trophy" in the ladies doubles, Julia Worrall and Lindsey Cochrane triumphed against Heather Williams and Linda Smith.
The Mixed doubles title went to Simon Nuttall and Julia Worrall, who continued their run of good form from the mixed league.
In the fun mixed doubles where partners are picked from a hat, Simon Nuttall and Margaret Wilding took the trophy.
The veterans final saw the accurate and steady play of Bill Oakley and Sue Bradley beating Graham Goodall and Liz Oldfied.
Thanks to Val keeling for organising another successful tournament and to all the members who entered the tournament.

Wimbledon 2009 & British Tennis Membership

You are probably aware that the Club has recently disaffiliated from the Lawn Tennis Association. However, it would appear that our members are still eligible for free membership of the British Tennis Association until February 2009. Details (including benefits) are found on the following link http://www.lta.org.uk/British-Tennis-membership/

The Club will not now be eligible for Wimbledon tickets (and even affiliated Clubs will receive a very restricted allocation, if any). THEREFORE, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN OBTAINING TICKETS FOR WIMBLEDON 2009 PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING (quoted from the Wimbledon website):

"To enter the draw for 2009 ballot you must first obtain an application form from 1st August 2008. Completed forms must be returned no later than 31st December 2008. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, DL size (110mm x 220mm) to:
Ticket Office, AELTC, PO Box 98, London SW19 5AE. Only ONE application per household is permitted."

Good luck!

Club Subscriptions for 2008/9

Subscriptions have risen slightly this year, and this is simply to ensure sufficient funds are available to keep maintaining the high quality playing facilities. Courts 1 & 2 will be resurfaced at the end of March, and you will no doubt have seen the improvement to courts 5 & 6 which were resurfaced last year. The club’s investment in the playing facilities in the last 12 months alone has been over £ 30,000.

Your subscription includes: play on 6 high quality tennis courts and free use of floodlights, clubhouse, access to coaching and a new coaching programme, free supervised junior clubnights (April – September) and both social & competitive tennis. Your club is still one of the cheapest and friendliest in the area.

Membership fees are due from 1 April 2008, and this year new locks will be fitted on 30 April. To make sure you get your new key and shoe tags in advance of the lock change, please get your cheques into Heather Williams as soon as possible.

American Tournament

Remember that Sunday of gale force winds and showers (22nd June)? Well, can you believe that 24 club members braved the elements and, with due reverence to our club's motto "It's not the winning that counts but the delicious cake that follows" tennis was the winner! Congratulations to Lindsey Cochrane, Anne Stewart, Iain Pemberton and Tony Hart who took home the 'trophies', but most of all, thank you to everyone who joined in and contributed to another great event.

A special vote of thanks to the makers of the scrumptious cakes and to Linda Pinder and Barbara O'Neill for organising the afternoon.
