Well another Club Tournament ends with a very soggy finale. Unfortunately the finals day was a wash out, for the first time that I can remember. Because of the inclement weather most of the finals, even though they had to be rearranged for other times, were still played in wet conditions. Congratulations to the winners, and as always a big thank you to all the players that took part and played in such damp conditions. The tennis matches were hard fought with some excellent tennis being played. The success of the tournament is always down to a team effort, and this year was no exception, so a big thank you to all of you involved in this event. The Tournament wouldn't be the same without a few hiccups, but on the whole despite the poor weather conditions the tournament went well. It is the players that make this tournament happen, so I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, and I would like to thank all the finalists and spectators for their patience and understanding reguarding the rearrangements that had to be made. Next year I hope it will be a bumper year for entrants, and everyone will join in this very special club event. Val Keeling Gerry Ferber & Maureen Kirby tournament Sept 2011Bank Holiday Sunday and the annual tournament in memory of two of the club’s past members saw a record turnout. Thirty players brightened up the grey afternoon with an entertaining display of skilled, competitive tennis, mixed in with the traditional quota of ‘tantrums’ and banter!Steve Harvey, Duncan Smith and Graham Finnigan tied in 2nd place, only one point behind the winner, Russ Smith who received his trophy (and customary kiss!) from Carol Ferber. Lyn Warburton and Hilary Burgess were runners-up to new member, Marianne Franks, receiving her first club trophy from one of our longest-serving members, Norman Kirby. An outstanding afternoon was rounded off by a delicious BBQ and the customary home-made cakes. Our grateful thanks to Linda Sealey who organised all the refreshments and to Jane Wright who helped organise the tournament. Junior Tournament July 2011

| The traditional August Bank Holiday weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of 20 players who competed for our two very special trophies in memory of Gerry Ferber & Maureen Kirby. A great mix of participants, from team members to clubnight players, entered into the spirit of the afternoon. Closely contested games with some very memorable rallies - suitably rewarded with prizes if not the point - were the flavour of the afternoon, with the 'top places' changing after every round. A victorious Gaynor Hawthornethwaite narrowly beat Linda Pinder and Margaret Wilding to be presented with the Ladies trophy by Norman Kirby. And Damian Cookson, received the Men's trophy from Carol Ferber, with Richard Ellison the close runner-up. Sincere thanks to Linda Pinder for organising the delicious BBQ, to Kevin for braving to rain to make sure it was cooked to perfection and to Graham Finnigan for providing the bread rolls again. AND A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO JOINED IN AND MAKE THIS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL AND ENJOYABLE OCCASION! |
Club Tournament Finals 2008Cuddington’s Tennis Club’s tournament finals were held on Sunday 13th July, supported and cheered by a large crowd who were treated to some thrilling matches on a wonderfully hot and sunny afternoon. For the first time in many years, the men's final was contested by two of the club's talented juniors, Brad Bird and Alex King. The spectators were treated to some inspired tennis from both players, with Alex King the eventual winner. Lindsey Cochrane and Liz Oldfield faced each other for the second year running in the ladies singles final, with Lindsey taking the trophy this year winning the tactical game against Liz’s hallmark accurate slice shots. The men’s doubles final kept everyone on the edge of their seats with both pairs playing some awesome shots. With both pairs winning one set each Alex King's powerful ground strokes combined with strong volleying from Jamie Cummins tipped the balance in the deciding set. In what has become known as the "Worrall trophy" in the ladies doubles, Julia Worrall and Lindsey Cochrane triumphed against Heather Williams and Linda Smith. The Mixed doubles title went to Simon Nuttall and Julia Worrall, who continued their run of good form from the mixed league. In the fun mixed doubles where partners are picked from a hat, Simon Nuttall and Margaret Wilding took the trophy. The veterans final saw the accurate and steady play of Bill Oakley and Sue Bradley beating Graham Goodall and Liz Oldfied. Thanks to Val keeling for organising another successful tournament and to all the members who entered the tournament. Click here for pictures of the winners and runners up |

Junior Tournament 2008Please click here for a full list of players who entered the tournamentand here for some photographs of the day. On Sunday 7th September the rain clouds thankfully parted for a few hours and we ran a very successful Junior Fun Tournament and BBQ. 30 Juniors aged 4 - 15 battled it out and for most, like Miles and Liam aged 5 and 4 respectively, it was their first taste of tournament tennis. A large supporting group of parents and club members were treated to an afternoon of great competitive tennis played with a lot of fun and admirable "fairness". The 16 & under group produced fine tennis and the round-robin stage was won by Joe Little. They then played the semi finals with Micahel Johnston beating Joe in a closely contested match, and Nick Sommerville beating Tom Faulkner. The exciting final saw Nick Sommerville just pipping his best mate Michael Johnston 11-9 in the tie break. The 12 & under players were seeded into 2 groups after the initial round robin stage. Chris Anderson was the overall winner, taking the Premier group title from Nathan Sherrard by just 1 point; Eddie Dickinson and James Pemberton tied in 3rd place. The 12 & under runner's-up group was also very close with Chris Alley winning on 19 points followed by Hannah Rossiter in 2nd place on 18 and joint 3rd Ben Hilton and Jordan Randall. We split the 10 & under players into 2 groups and each player played everyone in their group, earning points for their team. Group 1 was won by Ella Pemberton who played really well all day and was the overall winner. 2nd place in the group went to Alice Pemberton with Alex Doyle in 3rd. Winner of Group 2 was Elizabeth Crowther, with Miles Hilton in 2nd place and Natalie and Liam Geary taking 3rd & 4th places. The winner of the team event was the 'Reds' by 152 - 148 points - congratulations to Oscar Bradley, Katy Bryer, Rebecca Crowther, Alice Pemberton, Natalie Geary & Elizabeth Crowther. Well done to every competitor who turned up, gave it their all and had a great experience. And sincere thanks to all those parents and members who gave up their time and helped with the umpiring and generally supported our juniors. It was greatly appreciated. Gary Ward Club coach |
