Double Honours for Cuddington and Sandiway Tennis Club

Members of the Cuddington and Sandiway Tennis Club had good reason to feel proud of themselves at the end of November when they scooped not one, but two awards at the Cheshire County Lawn Tennis Association Annual Awards.

The Club picked up a ‘Finalist Award’ in the Club of the Year category which was in recognition of all the work they have done to improve the facilities as well as opening the courts to the wider community by introducing Public Access to two of their courts from July this year.

On top of this, Mike Linsell, the Club Chairman, came away with the ‘Unsung Hero Award’ in recognition of his unstinting hard work for the club, specifically facilitating the Tennis Mark accreditation, the introduction of Tiger Turf on two of the courts (the latest technology astroturf), as well as pushing forward the ongoing floodlighting project on the 2 currently unlit courts.

Gerry Ferber & Maureen Kirby Tournament

24 eager players turned up for the annual Gerry Ferber and Maureen Kirby American Tournament on Sunday 2 October. Having been postponed from August we were doubtful that the weather would be fair at this later date but the Indian Summer held for us and we were bathed in sunshine all afternoon. Congratulations to winners Liz Richards and Dinny Davies.

Great British Tennis Weekend Saturday August 6th

Let me set the scene – warm sunshine, cheerful bunting, great music and delicious refreshments, the thwack of tennis balls, fresh air, exercise and friendly faces  – this is what greeted the nearly 50 people who turned up for our Great British Tennis Weekend last Saturday 6 August.....more.....

Information for Club members about Courts 1 & 2

At the AGM in April it was outlined that the club had plans to hire out some of our courts to non-members, but only at non-peak times. We then sent out an email to members on 7th June explaining what was planned.

The benefits to the Club of hiring out courts at non-peak times are threefold:-

    1. It will help build and maintain our relationship with the local community
    2. It will help generate further income to the club in order for us to undertake further development activities which will greatly benefit the club and its members, such as floodlighting for courts 1 & 2
    3. It will assist with the opening up of new funding avenues (including some funding already received from the LTA) which will enable projects to be undertaken to further enhance the club's facilities.

In line with these plans, would members please be aware that, with effect from Monday 11th July 2016, we will be going live with the facility for non-members to hire courts 1 & 2 at designated non-peak times during the week.

Anyone hiring these courts will enter the courts using the new access gate on the Norley Road side of the courts. They will enter on a keypad at this gate a booking code that they have been given when booking online through ClubSpark and paying online via GoCardless. Their booking code will cease to function at the end of their hire period. At the end of the hire period, hirers should exit the courts promptly via the Norley Road side gate.

We intend that non-members hiring our courts will have access only to courts 1 & 2. To prevent non-members accessing other areas of the Club’s premises, a mechanical keypad lock will be installed on the inside of the court 1 gate adjacent to the clubhouse. Members will be given the code for this lock which they will need to use whenever exiting from courts 1 & 2 via this gate. Additionally, a large sign will be positioned on the inside of this gate alerting non-members to the access restrictions and making it clear that they are not expected to use this gate.

A schedule showing the times of the week during which non-members may hire courts 1 & 2 is shown on our Club website. You can see this schedule by visiting clicking on the 'court booking for non-members' tab where you will find the schedule. The times of the week when these courts are available for hire are shown as ‘priority for pay and play’.

Should you arrive at the Club during one of the designated court hire periods and find that, at that time, courts 1 & 2 are being used by non-members who have hired these courts, please arrange to play on an alternative court.

Also, should you be playing on courts 1 & 2 during one of the designated court hire periods and find that, at that time, non-members who have hired these courts arrive to play, please arrange to vacate these courts promptly and continue your match on an alternative court.

The Committee will be regularly reviewing the pattern of usage of our courts so, during a designated court 1 & 2 hire period, should you experience any problems in finding an alternative court to play on, please let us know.

If we find over time that these initial court hire arrangements are adversely impacting on the opportunities for our members to play when they would like to, we will of course make any necessary changes to the schedule for court hire.

Your co-operation with these arrangements is greatly appreciated!

Gala Day Saturday 11th June

Armed with our giant tennis racquet and our Play Tennis for Free banners, we ran a busy stall on Saturday 11 June at the Cuddington and Sandiway Village Gala Day. We ran two fun games – the ever popular Guess How Many Balls in the Box game with a goody bag prize and also a simple game to hit 3 tennis balls into a bin which proved very addictive with many youngsters who played again and again to try and get their name into the draw for a brand new tennis racquet (thanks to our coach John for this great prize!). The goody bag was run by Margaret Hough and the tennis racquet was won by one of our Junior members, Caitlin McKendrick. Well done to both!

In addition to the games, we were busy giving out lots of information on membership and coaching, but also, more importantly, a flyer about the Great British Tennis Weekend that we are holding at the club on Saturday 6 August from 9.00am-2.30pm plus information about the imminent opening of Courts 1 & 2 to the community/general public with a link to our website for information on when this will go live.
